Choosing the proper equipment
I've tried to describe briefly my equipment list before departure below. More information can also be found under the 'budget' section.
My main focus was to get appropriate gears with minimal weight and volume, price coming only in priority number 3.
At departure, my bike + panniers with some food but no water weighed 40kg.
My weather shields should allow me to sleep by negative 8 deg. centigrade and survive to neg 15C/neg 20C temperature minima.

Sunglasses
According to me, good high-mountain sunglasses (with hard sideshields) are more than necessary. I under-estimated this point at departure but it became obvious after the first windy or sunny days that I would not go very far with only my streetwear sunglasses.
"Normal" sunglasses protect from the dust and insects. But they are unlikely to filter UV´s and IR´s properly on the long term and are too open to prevent your eyes from drying and becoming red and sore after a couple of hours. |

Tires and spares
x700-(that is 27.5 inches- ) diameter tires are not common out of Europe...
Get enough spares with you or prefer the more standard x26-diameter ones to feel safe.
Also, be careful when choosing your wheel frames: they must accept both types of valves, small presta's and larger car-like ones.
Allow enough reserve of lubricant... you need to pour some fresh one on your gears at least every 200km... More often in case of rain.
